EU strongly recommends COVID-19 test before departure from China

The European Union (EU) strongly recommended all 27 member countries on the 4th (local time) to "conduct a COVID-19 test before departure for entrants from China." China is expected to ease restrictions on its citizens' departure from the 8th, attracting a large number of travelers from China. _+$&_

According to the Associated Press and Euronews, Sweden, the rotating chair of the EU Council, said in a statement that it agreed on EU-level "coordinated preventive measures" at an emergency meeting in Brussels, Belgium.

Swedish authorities said, "It is strongly recommended for member countries to introduce COVID-19 negative confirmation requirements within 48 hours before departure for all flight passengers departing from China." He added, "Members agreed to recommend all passengers on flights to and from China to wear medical, FFP2, N95 and KN95 masks."

However, the EU did not mandate member countries to conduct COVID-19 tests before the departure of entrants from China. Analysts say that the level was adjusted in consideration of China's opposition. The EU said, "We will decide again after watching the situation from the 8th to the middle of this month, when China's easing of its travel regulations becomes official."

However, according to the Associated Press, the previous day, the EU Health and Safety Committee already approved the introduction of COVID-19 tests before departure for travelers from China. As a result, many EU member countries are expected to introduce COVID-19 tests on travelers from China based on this recommendation. Italy, France, and Spain are already conducting their own COVID-19 tests or receiving negative confirmations for arrivals from China. South Korea, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, India, and Australia have also strengthened this kind of quarantine for arrivals from China.

China is protesting a series of restrictions on entry from China by major countries. Earlier on the 4th, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said, "It lacks scientific evidence to impose restrictions on entry only to China," adding, "We will no longer tolerate such excessive practices."

In China, the number of COVID-19 infections has recently increased rapidly due to the aftermath of the abolition of the "Zero Corona" policy. British information analysis company Airfinity estimated at the end of last month that "the number of COVID-19 deaths in China will currently reach 9,000 per day." It is predicted that the death toll will peak on the 22nd in the wake of the Lunar New Year's Day, which will lead to active movement of Chinese people.

However, China has faced criticism for not transparently disclosing statistics related to COVID-19. The World Health Organization (WHO) urged transparent disclosure on the 4th, saying, "China's announcement of statistics such as COVID-19 confirmed patients, severe patients, and the number of deaths is a reduction in the actual situation, and information sharing is urgent."

However, some argue that full restrictions are not essential because the COVID-19 variant, which is known to be in vogue in China, has already been in vogue in Europe. The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which includes more than 300 airlines around the world, said, "It is disappointing to see such reflexive reintroduction of measures that have been found to be ineffective over the past three years."
