The smartphone division, which led Samsung Electronics' performance along with semiconductors, was also unable to escape from the slump in the fourth quarter of last year. This is because Samsung could not avoid the impact as global demand for smartphones continued to be sluggish.
While Samsung and its rival Apple, which divides the global smartphone market, are estimated to have taken the lead in quarterly market share with the iPhone 14, Samsung is in a desperate position to turn around with the Galaxy S23, a flagship smartphone that is set to be released in February.
Although Samsung's preliminary fourth-quarter earnings released on the 6th did not disclose specific performance by business, Samsung said in an explanation that all business sectors, including its flagship semiconductors, were difficult. In particular, regarding the mobile experience (MX) business sector that includes smartphones, Samsung explained, "The profit decreased due to weak demand due to continued macro issues (macroeconomic problems)."
Although the performance was far below the level predicted by securities firms, the slump itself was expected. First of all, the overall smartphone market was difficult last year. According to a forecast report released last month by Counterpoint Research, an international market research company, overall smartphone shipments in 2022 were estimated to be only 1.24 billion units, down 11% from the previous year.
The reason is sluggish demand to buy smartphones. Counterpoint Research estimated last year's smartphone replacement cycle at 43 months, the highest ever. As Samsung explained, macroeconomic unfavorable factors such as the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), the Russia-Ukraine war, inflation, and corresponding interest rate hikes have also affected the smartphone market. This sentiment of sluggish demand is expected to continue in the first half of 2023.
It is estimated that Samsung lagged behind Apple in its market share for smartphones in the fourth quarter. According to a report released last month by TrendForce, a Taiwanese-based market research company, Samsung maintained its No. 1 global market share in the first and third quarters of last year, but it was only 20.2% in the fourth quarter, falling behind Apple (24.6%).
In fact, Samsung's smartphone market share has repeatedly fallen behind in the second half of the year in recent years and recovered in the first half of the following year. In the fourth quarter of last year, Apple also saw a "new effect" with the release of the iPhone 14 in September, but Samsung can be seen as taking a breather ahead of the release of the Galaxy S23.
However, there are voices in the market that Samsung's new Galaxy S23 needs to supplement its performance and design, which are considered weaknesses in competition with Apple. In particular, the Galaxy S22, which was released last year, lost the support of some consumers who like premium mobile phones due to the controversy over the forced application of the "Game Optimization Service (GOS)"
GOS refers to a system that reduces heat generation and battery use by limiting major performance when running high-end applications (apps) such as games. Immediately after the release of the Galaxy S22, consumers strongly protested as the Galaxy S22 effectively forced the use of this function, and Samsung changed it to turn off the GOS function. Samsung is also considering improving the performance of application processors (APs), which are considered to be the CPU of smartphones and the reason for their inferiority in performance competition with iPhones.
Another long-term concern for Samsung smartphones is that a negative image has been created in terms of design compared to Apple's iPhone. Even in Korea, which is overwhelming its market share due to its convenience, the Galaxy series is often labeled an "old man phone" without absolute response from the younger generation.
Samsung has also put more effort into its recent design to reverse this image. President Roh Tae-moon, who leads the MX division, co-director of the Design Management Center, and Lee Il-hwan, who worked as the first Asian designer at Mercedes-Benz, was hired as the design team leader and vice president of the MX division.
The fact that the foldable Smartphone market, which is considered a next-generation premium model, is gradually growing is a positive factor for Samsung. TrendForce estimated that foldable phones accounted for 1.1% of the total smartphone market in 2022 in a report in December last year, and predicted that the ratio would rise to 1.5% in 2023. Samsung, which is leading the foldable phone market, is expected to occupy more than 80% of the foldable phone market this year despite the emergence of competitive foldable phones such as Google.
