The position of iPhones in Korea is expected to grow further next year. Not only will Apple Pay, a simple payment service, be introduced, but the iPhone will be able to be used as a smartphone for work at national and public institutions. Although it is entering the public service mobile phone market 10 years later than Samsung Electronics' Galaxy smartphones, it is expected to help Apple expand its domestic market share.
According to industries on the 30th, the NIS will unveil security standards for 'mobile device management' (MDM) products for iPhones for the first time on its official website early next year. The security requirements necessary for the iPhone to be introduced as a public official's work smartphone will be announced. Security requirements are security suitability verification standards that the state and public institutions must comply with when introducing and operating IT security products.
Mobile Device Management (MDM) is an information technology (IT) security product that manages electronic devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs used by individuals in an organization. It limits functions such as △ call △ Internet △ recording △ camera shooting in certain areas, and also helps employees access in-house work networks such as electronic payment and collaborate with colleagues with mobile devices.
◇ The iPhone will also be used as a government official's work phone from next year..."It's 10 years later than Samsung, but it's meaningful"
Currently, Google Android operating system (OS) mobile phones, which have MDM standards, are the only phones that can be used for business at national and public institutions. Samsung Electronics' Galaxy smartphone is a representative example.
Earlier, the NIS first unveiled the MDM security requirements for smartphones in March 2013, but only Android-based products such as Samsung Galaxy phones were subject to application. This was because Android phones were more preferred than iOS-based iPhones as business phones. According to market research firm Flurry, the market share of Android phones in Korea was 86 percent in August of the same year. △ Samsung Electronics 60% △ LG Electronics 15% △ Pantech 10% △ Other 1%. The share of iPhones was 14%.
However, as there have recently been a series of voices in the public market that they want to use Apple products, the NIS made an MDM policy for iPhones after discussing with Apple and MDM technology development companies. It is 10 years behind Samsung phones.
According to the draft established by the NIS, MDM for iPhones will follow security requirements like Android phones, and will be introduced to civil servants' work phones if they are listed on the list of verified products after receiving common evaluation standards (CC) certification or security function certificates.
However, personal iPhones cannot be used as public service phones. Samsung phones can be used as public service phones even if they are personal phones, but iPhones are different. Public institutions must purchase iPhones in the name of corporations and apply MDM technology individually to use them as work phones. This seems to be due to Apple's thorough security policy.
"MDM for iPhones does not apply to (consumer) devices that individuals live in mobile carrier agencies (such as)," an NIS official said at an event titled "IT Security Suitability Verification Policy Briefing" in June.
As the NIS establishes the iPhone MDM policy, the industry expects a significant change in the smartphone market for public institutions. Furthermore, it is observed that there may be a change in the domestic mobile phone market along with the public market. Recently, iPhone's domestic market share (Counterpoint Research) has also soared to 16.6% (2019) → 17.9% (2020) → 24.4% (2021).
Meanwhile, the NIS' security requirements for 'iPhone MDM' include standards related to tablet PC 'iPad' and smartwatch 'Apple Watch'. This means that 'iPad' and 'Apple Watch' can also be used for work in public institutions.
◇Apple Pay with Hyundai Card's Hand, Launched in Korea for the first time in 7 years..."Attention to Samsung's future location in the garden."
It cannot be ignored that Apple is currently preparing to launch Apple Pay in partnership with Hyundai Card. Apple Pay passed the Financial Supervisory Service's review of terms and conditions on the 4th of this month and is in the process of commercialization.
Apple Pay is a "pay service" that allows you to buy things without a real card, just like Samsung Pay installed on a Samsung phone. Apple previously negotiated with credit card companies to start services in the Korean market in 2015, but it failed due to the burden of installing NFC terminals with a 5% penetration rate in Korea and the issue of card payment fees.
The financial sector is also paying attention to the news of Apple Pay's launch in seven years. Ryu Chang-won, a researcher at Hana Financial Management Research Institute, said in a recent report, "The launch of Apple Pay will trigger competition in the offline simple payment market between Samsung and Apple."
