The Taiwanese government will split some of the excess tax revenue and pay Taiwan dollars (about 250,000 won) to the people per person.
Reuters reported on the morning of the 4th (local time) that Taiwan's Executive Director Su Jeon-chang made the remarks at a press conference after a local inspection of Cheongwon Reservoir.
According to the report, the Taiwanese government decided to use T$140 billion (about W5.81 trillion) for cash distribution to the public after considering how to use T$380 billion (about W15.79 trillion) accumulated in excess tax revenues last year. The remaining tax revenues after allocating cash will also be used to relieve the impact of global inflation, including electricity subsidies, employment and health insurance.
Director Su said, "All people, from young people to the elderly, will share the fruits of economic performance," adding, "To pay money, the Democratic Progressive Party must obtain approval from the majority of the legislative court." On the occasion of the Lunar New Year's Day on the 22nd of this month, he said, "We decided to allocate cash to give New Year's blessings to all citizens."
However, it has yet to be disclosed how the money will be distributed. The ruling Democratic Progressive Party expressed full support for the Taiwanese government's decision.
