More than nine months have passed since social distancing was lifted due to the spread of COVID-19. Service hours at government offices have been restored, but the bank doors are still closed at 3:30 p.m. On top of that, some commercial banks have decided to suspend operations even during lunchtime (1 hour), raising complaints from financial consumers.

According to the financial sector on the 6th, KB Kookmin Bank will test-run the "simultaneous use of lunch time" system for 14 branches from the 30th. In other words, the branch will be closed for an hour during the day when employees eat lunch.

Kookmin Bank will first close its 10 stores in public institutions and military units during lunchtime. From March 6, four stores located in government offices and universities will introduce it. The operation period is limited to six months. However, the lunch time during which the bank is suspended can be set differently depending on the characteristics of the branch.

An official from KB Kookmin Bank explained, "It is operated on a trial basis by public institutions and military units with low utilization rates of ordinary office workers, and most of the stores are in the form of branch offices with two to three employees."

Kookmin Bank is not the first bank to close at lunchtime. Earlier, local banks such as Daegu Bank and Busan Bank did not work for an hour from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. or from noon to 1 p.m. only for small stores. However, Kookmin Bank is the first large commercial bank to participate in this.

The suspension of bank lunch hours has been steadily demanded by the Financial Labor Union. The union is concerned that even if you work in two to three shifts during lunch time, if there is a gap in the number of people due to vacation and training, there are cases where you cannot eat lunch on time, which causes health problems for employees. In addition, it is argued that the risk of incomplete sales can be increased as windows become crowded due to shift work.

However, there are concerns that the bank's introduction of lunch time will add to the inconvenience of financial consumers. Attention is also being paid to whether it will spread to other banks. Currently, the bank's business hours are 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., an hour shorter than the existing (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.). On top of that, except for an hour of lunch time, customers can only visit and work for five hours a day.

An official from a commercial bank, who asked not to be named, said, "We will coordinate internally to minimize inconvenience to customers," but added, "In fact, I think we should suspend business during lunch after normalizing business hours."

Kim Joo-hyun, chairman of the Financial Services Commission, also personally ordered the normalization of the bank's business hours. Chairman of the states Affairs Commission Kim visited Kookmin Bank's flexible store the previous day and stressed, "With the COVID-19 quarantine situation normalized, restoring bank business hours normally will meet the public's sentiment and expectations for the banking sector."
